Kundarak Bank Gets New Addition
- Kundarak bank showed off their latest acquisition this pas Zol. Now standing on the outer balcony of the tower is a massive "Slaughterstone Behemoth". The immense construct was brought in from the Mror Holds by airship and now stands as a testament to how seriously House Kundarak takes the protection of your valuables. Kundarak Bank in Sharn already uses 4 Slaughterstone Eviscerators to guard its vaults, but the addition of the Behemoth is clearly intended to step up protection and provide a visual display of power. You can visit the construct by simply taking the ride up Kundarak Tower. A spokesman for the bank was reluctant to say just what would activate the Slaughterstone Behemoth into attack mode, but he insisted that the public display was perfectly safe.

Chronicle

Blue moonlight filtered through dark clouds onto the darkened face of Dezik Buruun. Under the smoke of the mighty (yet dormant) volcano four figures slipped silently up to the makeshift wall of the small village clinging to the mountainside. Quietly they scaled the wall and crept up to one of the shored, mine shaft-like, tunnels which led into the volcano - and hopefully to the object of their quest.

Cora, Sadie, and Thaspar were intensely stealthy and highly trained. They slipped down almost to the lip of the tunnel. Unfortunately they also had Majeek with them. Majeek was a boon in the wilderness, his knowledge of the best ways to travel and methods of attaining food were quite useful. Here, however, his clumsy and noisy passage grated in the ears of the other three like the footsteps of a giant. His movement did not seem to be alerting the two guards, but then, his foot hit a loose rock which tumbled down the hillside. Thaspar let out an involuntary grunt as the rock struck his head on its way down the mountain.

"D'you hear that?" said the goblin guarding the entrance.
"No," grunted a dark colored gnoll.
"I'm going to go check it out," the goblin said heading up the hill towards the source of the noise.
"Whatever."

In an instant everyone was flat among the large rocks which dotted the mountainside. The hapless goblin meandered right into the center of the knot of adventures.

"I guess it was nothing," he said, heading back.

The strike came like lightning. Sadie's sword flashed, Thaspar's fists blurred, Cora's dagger glinted, and Majeek maintained that he was much better with a bow. In no time the goblin was dead on the dusty ground. Although it was over in seconds the shouting and fighting had alerted the village. Soon the gnoll guard's head was rolling down the hillside, and at least a dozen gnolls and bugbears were clamoring from the ramshackle huts that the town consisted of. They did not look friendly.

The four adventurers bolted into the dark tunnel. As shoring flew by they could hear the roaring pursuit of the town's creatures. Suddenly, they came to dead end! All was not lost, however. A wooden elevator led down. The wood and ropes creaked under the weight of four creatures, and there was barely room for all of them aboard the contraption. Sadie unlatched the winch and let go - letting them almost free fall. The elevator came crashing to the floor of a small room. They could hear cursing above them, and the elevator was being hoisted back up. Sadie cut the ropes and they made a speedy retreat from the room - through a door to the west.

They found themselves in a hallway heading north. Immediately across from the door they had fled from was another door, and there were doors on either side of the hallway at the far north end. Cora went carefully over the nearest door and found that it was supporting the weight of a ceiling trap door. The door was stuck under the weight of whatever was inside. They decided to bypass this door and instead check out those at the end of the hallway.

Since the interior of the volcano was to the southwest, they decided to open the western door. Sadie unlocked it and they stepped into a gruesome scene. Piled against the south wall were a number of corpses. There was a very large three-armed creature lying dead, and several gnolls, bugbears and goblins piled around him. The only clue as to the original purpose of the room was a broken mirror against the north wall. As a precaution against basilisks and the like Sadie broke off a piece of the mirror.

The room had another door further west and they continued through it into a dark hallway which led north and south. To the north they could see that it branched east, but then faded into darkness. Majeek (who had darkvision) told them that there was a door at the north end.

The group decided to head south around a bend to the west, which ended up being more of a U-Turn, since after going only 10 feet west, it also headed to the north - all the way to a dead end. There was a door at the bend however, which opened into a very small empty room.

Cora decided to search the room for secret door and treasures. She stepped into the room. Suddenly with a magical hum everything went black.

"Cora? Cora?"

There was no response.

Sadie pulled her own lantern from her pack and lit it. Cora (and her bulls eye lantern) were gone. There was no sign of the halfling anywhere. Sadie peered into the room to get a better look. Blowing back the dust she saw a circle of runes on the floor of the room.

After some discussion it was decided that they should press on. They hoped that Cora had been teleported to some kind of cell or at least another location in the underground complex. This meant that they should try to locate her as quickly as possible. The other possibility as that she had been disintegrated. They didn't want to think about this, but if that was the case then pressing on was still the best course of action.

They searched the dead end, and finding nothing, they returned to the door at north end of the parallel hallway. They passed a fork which dead ended. Both the fork and the hallway they were in had doors into a corner room. They passed by these doors for the moment and tried the door at the north end of the hallway. It was stuck. Sadie and Thaspar took a run at it - WHUMP. The door shifted slightly, but did not open. They were going to take another run at it when they heard voices.

"Yeah I heard it too."
"We'd better check it out, it might be those scum who got in here earlier."

Before anyone could react a goblin poked his head out from the room they had passed through with the corpse pile. Spotting them immediately it charged. Immediately behind it was a second goblin and two gnolls armed with vicious looking battle axes.

Howling with fury the first goblin crashed into Majeek slashing him masterfully with its sword. The second slipped around the first, into the offshoot hallway and begun attacking Majeek around the corner. Majeek was beginning to protest that he really excelled at long range combat when he saw Sadie overhead. She clambered over the wall and into the dead end hallway, and slashed out at the second goblin with her sword.

Thaspar wasn't sure what to do. There wasn't room to fight alongside Majeek. He looked around for ideas. He was next to the door in the corner room. He burst the door open, hoping it wasn't trapped. The room was filled with all sorts of weapons and armor. He didn't have time to ponder this, however, as he flung the south door of the room open - hoping to catch the goblin outside it with a blow.

"You'll have to do better than that! Elf!" the goblin said, jumping out of the way of the door.

The gnolls, who could not reach the combat, and were not armed with ranged weapons, shouted insults and the combatants swerved, parried and slashed.

"I'm going to eat your face!" the goblin screeched.

Thaspar silenced him with his sword.

"You held your own against this worm," the closest gnoll said as he swaggered up to take the goblin's place - kicking its corpse out of the way, "but now you are going to die!"

The creature's battle axe was a whirling symphony of death. Though she managed to wound the gnoll several times Sadie fell to the brute's fierce weapon.

"You're next elf!" it growled, then erupted into hyena laughter.

Thaspar darted forward to attack but with a sudden whoosh the gnoll’s crude axe, already red with Sadie's blood, thudded into the elf's stomach. His eyes bulging with pain, he held onto the axe which was embedded within him - holding the gnoll in place. Swirling his body he brought his sword up with a vicious twisting motion. With a slicing sound and a splatter of blood the gnoll's head lay upon the floor.

Majeek was not faring well against the goblin. He really was more adept at ranged combat, and he just couldn't seem to hit the lithe little beast. As he swung and swung in vain the creature taunted him.

"Ha ha ha ha ha ha," it singsonged, "you can't hit me."

Meanwhile Thaspar moved to defend himself from the final gnoll which stepped up to fill his fallen companion's place. Sword and axe locked in a life and death struggle. Thaspar was already wounded and he staggered back through the doorway, hoping for a chance to quaff a healing potion. As he stepped back into the room, his sword clashing with the gnoll’s axe, he nearly tripped over Majeek. The ranger was lying bleeding and unconscious on the floor. The goblin standing over Majeek with a bloody dagger grinned at Thaspar toothily.

Thaspar was badly wounded and facing two opponents. All of his comrades had fallen. This was bad.

The goblin looked like the easier opponent. With two quick slices from him sword its body lay atop Majeek’s unconscious form. The gnoll was not as easily dispatched, however. The two combatants traded blows. Sparks flew as the axe crashed down the wall. Blood and gnoll fur splattered the floor. The tips of Thaspar's ears were nipped.

Both opponents were badly injured when the gnoll decided to run for it. Thaspar chased behind, slashing furiously at the gnolls back. When the creature finally realized that it could not escape, it turned for a battle to the death.

The gnoll’s first blow was fierce and deadly. As the blade cut deep into his flesh, Thaspar struggled to remain on his feet. The gnoll was gloating over his kill.

"Now you die elf," he growled.
"You first!" Thaspar grunted.

In a sudden flash he struck. Before the gnoll knew what had happened the monk's sword had skewered him. His eyes flashed a small look of surprise before the light went out of them and he slid off the sword to the ground.

Thaspar dashed back to his fallen comrades and administered healing. Majeek and Sadie were revived.

They decided to leave the stuck door alone for a while, as to not risk making any more noise.

That left only the door at the end of the first hallway. Sadie easily unlocked the door and they progressed into another area. The door simply led into another hallway leading east which quickly bent to the north. Where the hallway bent there was a wooden door to the east. Along the hall to the north was a branch to the right. Majeek informed them that the hallway bent westward at the very end, and there was a door there.

Taking the rooms one at a time, in case Cora was in one of them, the group opened the nearest entrance. It led into the corner of a very large room.

The floor of the room was marked out in large 5 by 5 foot squares. The squares were separated by narrow, but deep grooves cut into the stone floor. The square in the far corner was a raised stone block with a tablet sitting on it. Five of the squares near the door were covered with swirling golden patterns which gave off faint light in the darkness. Carved into the north wall near the door was writing in ancient goblin. The floor of the room was littered with charred gnoll and hobgoblin corpses.

Since Cora was the only party member who could speak ancient goblin they decided to leave this room alone for now. They hoped that Cora was still ok.

They next took the eastern branch. This branch quickly turned north, but there was a door to the east at the bend. The northern hallway ended with a door.

Again they selected the nearest door. The door opened into a long, wide hallway. Ornate pillars lined the passage. The room was only a remnant of its former glory, however. The golden torch holders had been ripped from the walls, and the shreds of cloth told of massive tapestries which had been torn down. Between each pillar there was a pile of coal. At the end of the hallway were two massive and beautifully decorated stone doors.

Finding the doors locked with a complex mechanism, Sadie set about unlocking them while Thaspar and Majeek searched the room. After several minutes of fiddling Sadie was rewarded with a 'click' as the lock opened. She swung open the massive doors, which lead to a wide stone staircase leading downward.

***

Meanwhile Cora hurried down the steep slope of Dezik Buruun. She had been exploring the ruins with Thaspar and Sadie when suddenly she found herself on a large stone slab on the mountain, high above the town. A nearby cracked stone slab didn't seem to do anything, so there was nothing for it but to walk back to the town and re-enter the ruin. She pushed on, hoping that the others had not moved on, and that she could still make it into the town under cover of night.

Clambering over the wooden wall she silently crept up to the upper entrance once again. This time she decided to make use of the wand of spider climb that she had found under Sharn. Climbing upside down, as easily as on a ladder, she simply slipped over the lip of the tunnel and climbed right in, over the heads of the guards. Climbing down past the broken elevator, she found herself in the same place she had been earlier that day.

The first thing she noticed in the room was a long pole. That will work perfectly with that trap door, she thought.

First she checked the teleporter room and the surrounding area. No one seemed to be around, although there were signs of a battle. Cora decided to track down here friends systematically - and find some treasure on the way.

She returned to the trapped door just outside the entrance. The pole did indeed fit exactly into a slot in the trapped ceiling and the floor below. This took the weight off the door and she opened it. The room was filled with all manner of junk. It looked like items of loot which had been indiscriminately collected from other rooms. Sifting through, Cora found some useful items however.

The resourceful halfling picked her way through the dungeon in almost the same path as her companions. That is, except for finding all manner of hidden treasure. She found hidden doors and hidden treasures. She even found a crude map, written in ancient goblin, which mentioned a "switch" and an "entrance". She explored a bit more of the complex, and had to hide from a few gnolls, and disarm some nasty traps. In all she cleaned up what her companions had not and finally headed down the stone stairs much richer.

***

In the meantime the other group had gotten themselves into trouble. At the bottom of the stairs they met with a long hallway heading north and south. This hallway was set with many small alcoves. There was also a door directly across from the stairs. This door led into a huge open room. Not wanting to risk the exposure they took the hallway to the north.

It turned out that the alcoves housed paintings. The paintings were ancient and almost completely faded, so it was nearly impossible to make out what they had originally been. They didn't seem to pose any threat, so they continued on to the door.

Sadie creaked the door open a crack. Within the room was a large pile of gold, but atop it was a large skeletal creature. It had a long purple, rotting intestine which seemed to writhe and move within it. Sadie quietly closed the door and they made a quick and silent retreat.

The alcoves to the south were also filled with paintings, except those on the end. The final alcoves were large and filled with big, squat statues. The statues were headless and crudely carved of stone, with long crude claws. There were three alcoves on either side of the hallway, and one at the end. All were filled with these statues, except for the centre one on the east side. This seemed a bit suspicious so Sadie went over it in great detail and found that it was a hidden door.

There was some discussion about whether to go through the door. Sadie and Thaspar felt that these statues might come to life, but Majeek thought it would be fine. In the end it was agreed to open the door and proceed quickly through before closing it.

The instant the door was unlatched they heard a sound behind them like a thousand tortured souls screaming for release. Their minds filling with a thousand possibilities of what might be behind them they rushed through the opening and slammed the door. Almost immediately they heard pounding coming from the other side.

The interior of this new room was squalid at best. The room was covered in filth and reeked of decay. The only other exit was a door in the southeast corner. In the northeast corner was a large pile of bones and hunched over it was a foul creature.

At first glance it resembled some sort of hobgoblin ghoul. Its greenish skin had turned a sickly yellow green with decay and rotting flesh dangled from its limbs. Its hands ended in fierce claws and two white tentacles sprouted disturbingly from beneath its arms. Its entire body was covered in disgusting open sores which were weeping a white fluid. Alerted to the pounding of the door it raised up and turned its gaze to the three adventurers who had just come into its domain. With a look of evil hunger it hissed, baring needle-like inch long teeth.

Thaspar didn't need to spend a lot of time discerning that this creature was an enemy. He jumped into combat, pummeling with his fists. The creature just looked at the monk hungrily. Lashing out with its sickly white tentacles it caught ahold of the elf. Thaspar was amazed at the creature’s unnatural strength as it held him in its embrace and pinned him to the floor. With horror he watched as the creature opened its mouth and plunged its inch long teeth into his shoulder blade. Then with dismay he struggled fruitlessly as he felt the creature injecting something into him. Searing pain overtook him. His whole body was in agony. It felt like his bones were melting! The pain was almost too much.

Sadie drew here sword and attacked while Majeek let fly two arrows from his bow. Both struck the creature forcefully. The monstrosity howled with pain. Turning angrily to Majeek it let Thaspar slip from its steely grasp. Fixing on the ranger it ran and with catlike agility it pounced on him. Wrapping its body around the elf as they fell together it plunged its teeth into his shoulder. The pain was too much for Majeek and he fell unconscious. Sadie hacked at the fiend while Thaspar drew his sword, but it was too late.

Its lips curled into a toothy grin and with a look of sadistic pleasure the monster rose from the still form of Majeek Trickmackur. The elven ranger's body was limp and lifeless. His face had sunken in and his whole body was flattened and empty - white fluid leaked from the bite. The creature had dissolved all of his bones.

Meanwhile the rhythmic thumping and horrible wailing of whatever was on the other side of the door continued. This was bad.

Sadie was nearly downed as the creature bit and slashed at her with its claws. Its vicious teeth and sharp claws tore deep and she grimaced with agony. Grinning wickedly it tried to get ahold of Thaspar with its tentacles once again. Thaspar’s amazing agility paid off this time and the creature couldn't get ahold of him. This afforded the duo the few seconds they needed. With a last shot of adrenaline they slew the grotesque horror.

The door looked like it was about to give way so Sadie gathered up Majeek’s disturbingly limp form, shoved it unceremoniously in a sack and into their pack of holding. It might be possible to get him raised. They rushed from their pursuers through the only exit and were stopped cold.

The next room was much like this one. There was a pile of bones and another creature - just like the last. They knew that they could not survive another encounter with one of these monstrosities so they both bolted through the next door - the only exit from the new room. They slammed the door in the nick of time, but they could hear long claws ripping the wood apart. They barricaded the door, drank all of their potions, and prepared for a last stand.

***

Cora came down the same stairs much later. Unlike her friends she decided to enter the large open room. The place seemed to be a huge marketplace. Empty channels that once held water crisscrossed the floor, and the center of the room was furnished with a huge hobgoblin fountain - now dried up. The room was strewn with rubble and the remains of market carts. As Cora stooped to examine one she felt the hair on the back of her neck standing on end. Turning her eyes to the side she saw a creature crouched in the darkness behind some rubble.

At first glance it resembled a spider - it had a small body with many long spindly legs. Closer inspection would have counted ten, instead of eight. Also, the eyes clustered on its face were humanoid rather than compound. Its body was orange and covered in hundreds of long spikes. Even its legs were covered in the spines. Legs and all it was as big as a small house. Its mandibles tensed as it prepared to pounce.

Cora bolted. She ran with every ounce of strength her body had. She ran faster than she knew she could run. Thinking of nothing but the nearest door, which was all the way across the square, her legs pounded on the stone floor. She could hear the behemoth behind her. Its legs scrabbling across the cobblestones were getting closer and closer. The door was almost within reach. She could hear its legs and mandibles clicking with the prospect of a meal. Her hand was on the door handle. Its legs were all around her. She flung the door open. The creature's mandibles opened for the kill.

With her last ounce of strength she flung herself inside the room and slammed the door behind her. In the same instant a long barbed spike pierced the door. As Cora lay panting on the ground the spike ripped out of the door, leaving a large hole in the centre.

The creature bent down to have a look. Its menacing eyes all focused on the panting halfling within. Thinking quickly Cora grabbed a flask of acid from her belt and threw it at the opening. It burst, showering the creature's eyes with acid and splintered glass. Screeching, it fled.

Cora had bough herself a bit of time, but she guessed that it would be back if she lingered. The room she was in was a library, although most of the bookshelves had fallen. She gave the books a cursory glance and paused only to rip some of the maps she found out of them before proceeding.

***

Sadie carefully poured over ever crevice of the room while Thaspar offered up a silent prayer of deliverance. The mood was dismal. With Majeek dead, hope of Cora’s survival was slipping away too. The scratching at the door had stopped, as had the wailing. One creature seemed to have killed the other, but the outcome was not clear. Before venturing back into the room they had come from Sadie was desperately trying to find another entrance.

Her work was not in vain. There was a small crack in the southeastern corner of the room which revealed a secret door. Pushing the slab of stone aside she stepped out onto a wide stone balcony of rock which hung out over a vertical tunnel. The tunnel wound up and down as far as she could see. Hanging down the center of the shaft was a wooden spiral staircase, supported by four frayed ropes which were attached to the stone just above them with metal pitons. Neither the rope, nor the wooden stairs looked particularly trustworthy.

Tentatively, Sadie put a small amount of weight of the stairs and they immediately shifted and one of the supporting ropes snapped. The entire contrivance wheeled crazily and now hung at a strange angle.

Sadie decided to check how far down the staircase went. She attached her rope to a piton and slipped down its length with ease. At the end of her 60 feet of rope she could just make out a rickety wooden bridge over water, about another 40 feet lower still.

She spent some time pondering what they might do. She didn't want to head back, but she didn't want to just jump down the shaft either. After some thought she came up with an idea: she would cut the lower 60 feet of the staircase off. This would dramatically reduce the weight on the upper 40 feet so that it could easily support an elf and halfling. They would then climb down the 40 feet of staircase, attach the 60 foot rope to the bottom, and climb down the remaining distance. It was a good plan.

Soon the lower portion of the staircase crashed into the bridge and water below. Sadie climbed back up to the top, where Thaspar was waiting. They tied themselves together and started down the staircase. Hanging at a funny angle they essentially had to climb down the boards rather than walk.

It was a good plan, but it failed to take into account one thing. Thaspar was not as good a climber as Sadie. Thaspar was making his way carefully down the stairs with Sadie below him. Without warning the board supporting his weight broke. He tried to grab ahold of something but he ended up only pushing himself farther into space. In a moment of vertigo he found himself falling.

Sadie stared in horror as Thaspar whizzed by her. She dug her claws into the boards, but it was not enough. Roped together, his weight ripped her from her perch. They desperately tried to grab hold again, but it was no use. Together they plunged into the darkness below.

***

Cora was getting very worried. The world seemed very big to her at this moment. As the three foot halfling crept through the ancient city which had been built for hobgoblins and bugbears she could sense danger all around her. Large danger.

She had left the library by the east door and come into a large natural cavern which she followed south. Through a pile of rubble she came back into constructed tunnels. That is where she found the room of bones. The small room was filled, almost to the ceiling, with bones. This was a chilling omen which she pondered unhappily as she slipped silently through the darkness.

She was passing through a partially collapsed room when she heard grunting and growling from up ahead. Fearing the worst, she darted behind a pile of rubble. Her heart was pounding as she prayed that it wouldn’t find her. She was the brains of the outfit, she told herself, the smiling face, the quick wit - but she could not hold her own in battle all by herself. Especially against the horrors she had encountered down her.

Her heart stopped as she saw two very large ape-like creatures enter the room. They were feral and prehistoric and they grunted to each other. For a horrifically long moment they paused, but then continued on into the natural cavern.

Cora waited a long time before moving, and when she did she hurried quickly away from the creatures. The hallway she took to the south led into a circular room. There were scorch marks on the floor and a burnt carcass of a small creature - probably a dire or horrid rat. Cora decided to use her wand of spider climb and again, and passed through he room on the domed ceiling.

The door of the circular room was ajar and it led into a passageway which forked in a number of directions. To the west was a large patch of luminescent growth covering the floor. Still keeping to the ceiling, Cora climbed past this, heading further west. This led her into a large room, with 12 smaller, doored rooms within it. Quickly she got out the crude map she had found earlier. It had an area with similar markings. She figured that she was close to the area marked "switch" on the map.

Following the map she came to a place where the room had collapsed and a natural tunnel lay ahead. This tunnel eventually came to a crossroads. Still on the roof she could see a body, dressed in armor lying to the west. There was also extreme heat emanating from that direction. She was about to investigate when she saw a very large creature that looked like some kind of hobgoblin ghoul emerge from the west and start feasting on the body.

This was too much. Cora was lost. She didn't know where her friends were. She was terrified. She closed her eyes and in desperation prayed to Olladra for luck.

***

With a loud slap Thaspar and Sadie hit the water. It knocked the wind out of them, but that was the least of their worries. The water was scalding hot. This was getting to be a pattern which Sadie did not like. They both struggled to the surface and dredged their soaked bodies out of the water. They lay steaming on the stone lip of the pool for a few moments.

When they had recovered, they decided to press on. There was only one door nearby. As Sadie checked it for traps she heard disturbing muttering coming from the other side.

This was it. They were on the brink of death. Whatever was through that door - they couldn't face it. Yet there was still some hope. Whatever was in there hadn't come out to investigate the noise they had been making.

They decided to camp for the night there. They were wounded, and Thaspar still felt awful from whatever that creature had injected into his bones. As soon as they had made the decision to stop they suddenly realized just how tired they were, and a wave of exhaustion overcame both of them, and they slept.

***

Cora had a feeling that she ought to head back to the library to sleep - she wasn't safe where she was. Using another spider climb charge she crept stealthily back to the library. There was no sign of the huge spider creature. Even here she did not feel safe. She was alone and cut off from her friends. She would probably die in this monster infested pit. She half-heartedly glanced over some books and gloomily picked at her rations for the day. Then she curled up, hidden under a partially fallen bookcase, and cried herself to sleep.
