The Battle of Graywall

Graywall Back in Brelish Hands - The glorious Brelish army has claimed a major victory over the monsters of Droaam. Last week, on 2 Aryth they pushed the last of the Droaamish troops out of the city. More Droaamish troops have been mustered from the interior, but General ir'Camyra expects to be able to hold the city as a major defensive point in the months to come.

Reports indicate the local Sharn heroes had a great part in the success of the operation. The wily Shifter, Sadie Wolfchild, the intrepid halfling, Cora Amarylis, and the stoic monk, Thaspar Besathlae, were instrumental in the downfall of major Droaamish generals. Virik the Wretched, general of the troops defending Droaam was a major obstacle to Brelish victory. Scaling the giant hag statue that was her outpost, these Sharn locals cast her and her group to the ground below. It was a sore blow for the monstrous troops and Breland gained the upper hand. Brelish forces were in control of the entire city within two days.

Argonth is also back up and running, after being damaged in the battle. It is now being used to keep the Brelish supply lines open, thus preventing a siege on the newly taken city.

Sadie, Thaspar, and Cora are expected to return to Sharn within the next week or so.

Outbreak Continues to Worsen in the Lower City - The disease outbreak in the lower city is showing no signs of letting up. The casualties are starting to mount. Even more disturbing are the accounts of what happens to the victims of the disease. It has been hard getting information out of the lower city, as large sections of it have been quarantined. In addition the disease is highly contagious, and simply traveling to the lower districts is considered extremely dangerous. There have been a few small outbreaks in the upper areas of the city, due to those foolhardy enough to visit the lower regions. These cases have been generally put under a type of house arrest.

We have managed to interview a few people who have witnessed the disease first hand. We met with Gregor Bhest, a laborer from Lower Central. He seems to have miraculously avoided catching the disease, but some of his friends have not been so lucky:

"Well, three of my mates got the plague. It’s gross. Just repulsive. First they got these crusty greenish patches of dry skin. But pretty quick they turned into pussy sores. They were all green, like rotting flesh, and they were weeping this thick, green goo. It’s enough to put a shiver down your spine. The green stuff is what’s contagious. The goo. You touch that, and you’re as good as dead! Anyways, my mate Keegan, this green crap spreads all over his body. I mean everywhere. He lost his hair, and it was all over his face. You never would've recognized him. He started acting real funny. Violent and moody. Wasn't himself. It was like the stuff was killin his brain. Anyways, I seem to be immune to this disease. I don't know why, maybe a gift of the gods - who knows. So I was visitin him. But he was just real angry. His wife was real sick to. By this time his whole body is covered in goey green guck. He doesn't even look human any more. All of a sudden he starts convusin and gurgling. I don't know what to do. Then, before I can do anything his body just collapses in on isself. All that’s left of him is a green blob of that damned goo! I figured he’s gone, so I starts sayin a few words over my friend, right. And suddenly the blob starts moving towards me, and the damn thing attacked me! It attacked me! I ran outta there. And I'm telling you, now, those damn blobs are everywhere. Its chaos down there!"

Gregor's story seems impossible, but the Inquisitive has confirmed activity like this with several sources. It seems that the latter stages of the disease cause the victim to completely break down into some kind of blob, which then begins to ooze with a mind of its own.

Sharn Copes with Full Scale Plague - A deadly plague has been racking the city during the last few weeks. Originally contained to the lower regions, the outbreak has now spread to every quarter of the city. The citizens of the city are terrified to go outside, and the lower regions are in chaos, with acid green blobs wreaking havoc everywhere.

The city government has asked anyone who can cast spells to cure disease to gather at a number of key points in the city. Free disease curing will be offered at these spots 24 hours a day. Still, there are not nearly enough healers to meet the demand. In addition, it appears that those in the later stages of the disease are beyond help. Reports indicate that curing severe cases usually leads to the death of the subject - though it prevents the final blob form. In the earlier stages, upon having the spell cast, the discharge immediately stops and the patches of dry greenish skin clear up within 24 hours.

House Jorasco has blasted the city for its move to open up free healing points throughout Sharn. Until recently the house was raking in massive profits from the outbreak. Apparently several Jorasco healers were suspended last week for offering healing for free, or even at half price. The house officials have issued a statement that any of their members caught assisting the free healing centers will be suspended, and possibly expelled. House Jorasco has accused the city of meddling in House affairs, and is suing the government for damages.

Chronicle

Cora, Thaspar, and Sadie could see the fires of war burning for days, as they rode south toward Graywall. When they had left the city, it was under the control of monsters - and a very sinister place. Now, it seemed that the Brelish were attacking.

As they at last crested a hill, they saw the mighty city. The fall days were passing away, and even in the mid afternoon, the sky was tinging orange. Below them lay a city in ruin. Fire and battle raged within the rubble strewn streets. They could see the enormous bulk of Argonth, Breland’s flying fortress, resting in the midst of the city. Around the northeastern perimeter of the city wall were many tents, flying the Brelish standard - the great roaring bear!

Everyone agreed that they wanted to help Breland if they could, so they made their way down to the largest tent.

They were escorted into the tent by a soldier guarding the rear of the army. Inside they heard a coarse voice yelling,

"What do you expect me to do about it?! If Reginald wasn't good enough, then who is? Do you expect a bunch of stealthy fighters to just appear out of the Byeshk foothills!?"

The speaker was a half-orc with a very substantial beard. He was yelling at a pale faced half-elf in full plate mail. As the trio entered the tent he turned and faced them saying, "Who the hell are you?"

"We're here to help the Brelish army sir"

As they spoke it came out that the commanders name was Ek Tukkle, and that the battle inside the city was not going well for Breland at the moment.

“Alright. Our last information is from this morning. Damn platoon of gnolls took out or communications outpost at the front lines, so we have to get out information from message runners. Which really pisses me off!"

"Anyway, Argonth is here," he pointed to a map of Graywall spread out in the center of the tent. "They managed to damage the drive and it crash-landed in the residential area in the south of the city. Anyway, we control about a third of the city. At first we managed to make good headway, but it’s been block-to-block fighting for the last three days. We’ve only claimed about 10 blocks since we set up out initial outposts."

"The primary fighting is going on here," he pointed to the area just south of the upper city gates. "There are enough resisters on the other front lines to prevent us from attacking, but our primary energies are devoted here, just outside the gates to the upper city. Which is where the problem lies."

"At the top of either side of the gates are these huge frickin’ statues. Apparently one’s a mind flayer and the other’s a hag. Whatever. Anyways, this damn medusa is on top of the hag with a bunch o’ clerics. Not only are they wreaking havoc on the battle below them, but that damn snakehead has got some kinda voice amplifier and is shouting out commands and encouragement to her troops. Someone needs to take her out. I guess her whole damn entourage is shielded from arrows. No-one can touch ‘er."

"So we figured we should send someone in to sneak up and take ‘er out. We sent in one of our scouts, but he was killed scaling the wall beside the gate, ‘pparently."

"We need someone to take out that medusa. And if it makes a difference, she’s got a bounty on ‘er head. She’s the three of spades I guess. Turns out they kinda underestimated her as only the three. Her bounty has been raised to 6,000 gold, dead or alive. Apparently there’s also some other spades in the city, but I don’t know where."

This was exactly what the group was looking for - a chance to help out the Brelish army which catered to their unique skills. They happily agreed to do what they could and try to take down Virik. Departing the tent, they marched towards the north gate of Graywall purposefully. The last time they had gone through those gates they were being thrown out - now they were returning to conquer.

As they passed the city gates they saw a very different Graywall to that they had visited only a month earlier. Many of the buildings directly before them had collapsed. It was clear that a good deal of fighting had taken place in these streets. To their right they could see the looming shape of Graywall arena. Far to the south the colossal form of Argonth rose above the rooftops. They could hear pitched fighting to the south.

They decided to head south along the wall to the upper city towards the fighting outside the gate. Even from here they could see the massive stone statues, but they were too far away to make out who might be on them.

As they began making their way down the wide street there was suddenly a shout of alarm behind them. With sudden shock they saw a lumbering beast burst from around the wall and charge directly towards them. It was a sword-tooth titan. Its thick, heavily muscled legs pounded the earth, and its massive claws sent chucks of flagstone skittering is all directions. Its long body ended in a gaping maw with serrated teeth that were indeed the size of swords. It was mostly an orangey-brown hue, but its reptilian skin was shot through with streaks of black. On its thigh was branded the words "Graywall Arena".

It attacked with the ferocity of a beast trained for combat - lunging out at Thaspar. Before he even knew what was happening the elf found himself inside the lizard's toothy grip. Bracing his body against its teeth he tried desperately to avoid being swallowed.

Soldiers were running up from all directions and Sadie rushed forward and jabbed her sword deep into the creature’s massive leg. Cora, miniscule in comparison to the behemoth swung around the other side to flank the beast.

It was hot inside the titan's mouth. Thaspar was nearly overpowered by the beast's foul breath which reeked of rotting meet. The nauseating smell was almost staggering. Warm saliva dripped onto his face, and the creature's hot tongue coiled around his leg. With a deafening roar the creature snapped its jaws shut, and its black tongue drew Thaspar into the beckoning void beyond.

In the mean-time Sadie and Cora fought ferociously to take down the beast which had swallowed their friend. They were soon joined by several Brelish soldiers. Their swords hacked at the monster from every angle. Roaring its jaws shot out at them, but it could not get hold.

It was unbelievably hot. Holding his breath Thaspar slashed furiously at the stomach of the beast with his weapon. The creature's gizzard was filled with large stones which smashed against him from every angle. His body was engulfed in stinging acid. He wondered if this was how it was all going to end. He struggled to pull a potion from his pack.

Time was slipping away, and the hope that Thaspar would survive was diminishing with each second. Cora scored a nasty blow on the swordtooth titan who roared in anger. Grinning Sadie attacked with gusto, but she didn't see the blow coming. The beast had been focusing on the soldiers, but suddenly it was looming over her. With a roar of hot, rancid breath its jaws were closing around her. She tried to jump, but its 8 inch serrated claws closed on her legs - sending shocks of pure agony coursing through her. Giddy with pain she saw the world as a blur of slow-motion as she was tossed into the air and swallowed by the creature. It roared with defiance.

Both of Cora's friends were inside the massive creature now. She wondered how her kinsmen on the Talenta plains handled these monstrosities. Knocking down soldiers with its mighty tail the creature rounded on her - eyeing halfling hungrily. It lunged forward, but then, it stopped. A look of confusion crossed its eyes for a moment. Then, suddenly its belly burst open, and with a shower of blood and bile Sadie, Thaspar, two soldiers, and the beast’s internal organs all spilled out onto the flagstone street. The look of shock still frozen in its eyes, the massive beast crashed down on the street - its black tongue lolling out of its lifeless mouth.

As Thaspar and Sadie rose from the gore there were shouts of triumph. The two soldiers were mostly digested, and quite dead, but everyone - especially Cora - was ecstatic to see that the elf and shifter had survived.

Brushing off bits of intestine the trio headed for the command tent to the south - if nothing else to get cleaned up.

The Brelish general, Tukid ir'Camyra was not in the tent - instead he was fighting on the "front lines." This was a patch of open square where debris and barricades provided guerilla fighting while arrows rained from rooftops. Squads made their way through twisting alleys to make surprise attacks from the flank. All around was the whistle of arrows, the flash of spells, and the shouts of battle.

On the north side of the battlefield was the gate to the upper city. From the walls archers rained death on the street below. Towering above them were the two titanic stone statues which guarded the gate. On the right was a mind flayer - its tentacles reaching out for the kill. On the left was a hag. Covered in ragged garments and matted hair the hideous visage looked outwards defiantly. Her left hand was clasped as in to crush her enemies. From amidst the raised fingers they could see several creatures hurling spells and firing arrows into the crowd below. In the midst of the hand was a large figure whose voice was amplified across the entire square.

"The humans are nothing to you! You will feast on their corpses when this is over!"
"Breland is sending a force through the back alley, cut them off!"
"Humanity is weak! Breland is weak!"

The trio decided that scaling the wall and statue in the midst of a full scale battle was less than optimal, so they slipped around the eastern side of the upper city walls. Using their wand of spider climb they quickly and silently climbed the wall and slipped over into the upper city.

All around them were large buildings, monstrous statues and open parkland. Flitting through alleys, they made their way closer and closer to the gates, and the statue. When they were directly below the massive hag, but on the Droaamish side, they began scaling the wall. Their spider climb was still active as they rushed past the archers atop the wall and began racing up the huge rock body of the statue.

Cora could see the battle far below and she clambered up the hag's torso and out onto her outstretched arm. Below her monsters fired arrows onto the Brelish troops below them. They were exceptionally high - the soldiers below looked like ants, flowing around the battlefield like oil and water. All the while, the deep female voice boomed from above.

Soon the trio had reached the hand, its fingers outstretched, as if clasping something. They put on the special goggles that the army had given them to help protect against the medusa's gaze. They could hear feet moving right above them.

Sadie acted first. With a roar she launched herself up over the edge of the hand. A gnoll firing arrows into the crowd below was taken totally by surprise. Before he could even react Sadie had wrapped herself around his ankles and hurled him from his perch. His panicked scream faded in the sudden silence.

Thaspar reached up over the hag's palm and did the same to another gnoll. Soon the creature was falling too - watching as his companion splatter against the flagstone below, seconds before he did. Virik, the medusa, the three of spades, glared defiantly as Cora hoisted herself onto the flat of the hand. Another gnoll was suddenly yanked off the platform. Cora got her first glimpse of the monster.

The medusa had a terrifying presence about her. From the neck down she was clad in shining full plate. The polished surface gleamed in the light, and etched into was a pattern of hundreds of writhing snakes. Gilt in copper the snakes had taken on a perfectly representative green coloration. In her plate covered hands she was grasping an exquisitely crafted bow. Only her face was uncovered. Two yellow eyes smoldered with evil inside the feral, green, reptilian face. Sprouting from her head was a mass of snakes. Dozens them were writhing, baring their teeth and hissing with minds of their own. Her posture, her voice, her presence exuded power, confidence, and cruelty.

Protected from the medusa's stare by her goggles Cora whirled her sword and attacked. Meanwhile Thaspar pulled himself up onto the palm. Sadie hurled herself onto the platform. There was only one gnoll remaining. With a fierce cry she dug her claws deep into the monster's furry flesh, and then let herself drop like a rock. Shifter and gnoll went hurtling off the stone hand, but Sadie caught hold of the statue at the last second - her claws tearing deep scratches in the stone. The gnoll was not so lucky. He flailed helplessly as he rushed to the same fate as his companions.

The trio now stood alone with Virik on the statue's hand. They advanced on her, but even outnumbered her presence was awesome. Arrows plunged deep into Sadie and Cora as they rushed forward. Even surrounded by three opponents she still loosed arrows from her glistening bow and cast dark spells. Her armor glinting in the sun, her deep voice echoing across the city, her powerful limbs lashing out, her snakes writhing; Virik was a powerful and deadly opponent. But... so were Cora, Thaspar and Sadie.

As Virik's snakes lashed out at Cora she faked that she had been hit. She flinched in mock pain. The medusa let her guard down and she turned to attack Thaspar. That is when Cora struck. Her small dagger found a chink in the monster's armor and plunged deep into her unprotected reptilian flesh. Howling with rage, Virik knew that she was beaten. In desperation she lunged at Thaspar. Wrapping him in an embrace of death she flung herself off the palm, much as Sadie had done earlier, grabbing hold of the statue at the last moment.

Thaspar, however, managed to also grab hold easily (with the help of his spider climb). She looked up defiantly as Sadie rushed over to where she held on to the stone. Hate filled eyes stared up at the Shifter as she whirled her sword and severed the monstrosities fingers.

Virik howled with rage and terror as she fell from the sky. All eyes were on her glistening armor as she plummeted toward the battle below. An eerie silence fell over the square as everyone paused to watch. Her amplified scream rung throughout the entire city. It ended with a terrifically loud crunching thump. He broken body and shattered armor lay sprawled on the flagstone, immediately between the two forces.

The effect was almost immediate. The moral of the Droaamish troop plummeted faster than their leader, and the trio watching from their high roost could see the immediate progress of the Brelish troops. Shouts of victory rose from the soldiers of Breland. As the group stood watching they noticed a well dressed figure beckoning them down to the command tent.

The climb down was a bit harrier than the ascent - their spider climb had worn off - but they soon found themselves in the command tent talking with Tukid ir'Camyra.

“Am I glad you’re here!

That was some impressive work you did up there, but I have to ask you another favor immediately.

Somehow word got out that we were pulling our troops off the border to attack Graywall. Apparently a small force from south Droaam has broken the border line and is now ravishing the Brelish countryside!

A force has been dispatched, but they are moving quickly. According to reports they are being led by a charismatic minotaur. It sounds like it might be the 6 of spades, but nothing has been confirmed. My thought is that if you take him out the troops will be thrown into disarray. They will definitely slow down, and they will have made less progress before the Brelish troops can wipe them out.

Thanks to you, I think this battle is won, and now I want you to take this minotaur out. If you ride all day and all night, you can probably reach the force by the end of the second day. You will need to lure him away from the troops to kill him.

Take this”

He handed each of them a small flask filled with clear liquid.

“This is a battle flask – the latest invention of the artificers of Sharn. It holds 8 potions. Each time you remove the cork it cycles through them. It’s full of Cure Light Wounds.

You can also grab any gear from here that you need, but go, quickly!”

He turned away to the battle, but then turned back with a funny look on his face. “Try to stop them before Grimshar. That’s where my wife and little girl live.

Please do hurry.

Once you are done, I release you from my service. You can claim your bounties when you return to Sharn.”

The chase was on. Thaspar and Sadie atop their horrid horses, and Cora on her wolf they raced through the Graywall Gap.

Sadie thought about meeting up with the six of spades. Grumut Firebrand had commanded the regiment that had slaughtered the Brelish refugees who had fled Graywall. The minotaur had killed, or at least ordered the killing of her family. Even now she had trouble remembering the incident. Some things were just too horrible to carry with you. She wondered what she would do. How would she kill Grumut? Would it be a fierce fight, or would she gloat over her prey. Would she kill him quickly, or give into the want for the revenge of a slow torturous death. Her head swam as they rode all night, and all day.

They and their mounts were utterly exhausted when they at last came up to the fresh fires. Along their ride they had seen many burnt villages. They saw their Brelish countrymen brutally and pointlessly murdered by the monstrous rabble. Now up ahead fresh fires were burning.

A small village was set between two hills, along the main road. They could see several dozen large creatures moving about amongst the burning huts, cutting down fleeing townsfolk. Suddenly a huge minotaur, covered in something shiny, burst from a burning house. He growled an order to a nearby gnoll, before charging and goring an old man fleeing his hovel. The other gnolls and minotaurs clearly feared and revered him. A sign, split in two from the top, read “Grimshar”.

Taking a quick counsel they decided that it would be best to fight Grumut alone, and that Sadie and Thaspar would lure his troops away from the village, while firing on them from horseback. Sadie gave Thaspar Virik's bow. Meanwhile Cora would swing around the far side of the town and see if she could rescue anyone.

Roaring and firing their arrows Sadie and Thaspar descended on the town. When Thaspar had first joined the order of the Broken Blade, he never dreamed he would be charging a group of monsters on horseback while firing arrows - but yet, here he was. Broken Blade training included basic use of all common weapons - since school lauded the ability to adapt to any situation. Thaspar had never used a bow in real combat, but he had had some practice, and turned out to be a remarkably good shot.

Soon two gnolls and had fallen and more were chasing the figures on horseback. They also attracted the attention of the minotaurs. The creatures in this army were not ordinary minotaurs, but some kind of fierce, feral version. They were much larger and their ragged fur was jet black. They slavering mouths were filled with sharp teeth, and long, yellow, curled horns burst from their heads. They ran towards the two with horrible speed, using all four limbs like and ape and they raced across the scorched earth. Spurring their horses onwards they fired backwards and circled the village.

***

Most of the troops were distracted as Cora threaded through burning building. Everything was ablaze. There were burning and dismembered villagers everywhere. Suddenly she heard a cry from a nearby building. She was about to enter when without warning Grumut appeared in front of her. Ducking behind the building she dared a peak at the minotaur.

He was very tall - even for a minotaur. Each of his horns was at least five feet long, and each was tipped with a black ring. Every square inch of his muscular body was covered in tattoos and piercings. Rings, chains, and studs covered his skin. He wore no clothing but a plain loincloth. In his hands was the most terrifying weapon Cora had ever seen. It was a greataxe. The blade was jet black, and the burning homes reflected on its polished surface. Even in the hands of a giant it looked enormous. The dual sided blade was at least the size of a large pub table! The blade of that axe was bigger than she was.

Cora didn't know what to do, but she knew she had to act. He hadn't seen her, and her hiding skills were impressive. Did she dare?

The massive bull creature roared as a small dart pierced his leg. The brute seemed more annoyed than hurt, and he came rushing over to where Cora was hiding. The huge beast was standing right over her now. This close, his size, in comparison to hers was staggering. She could hear his grunted breath as he towered over her - searching. Instead of seeing her, however, he lifted his axe and chopped his way into the burning house - the house she had heard a cry from earlier.

This was no good either. With no time to think she hurled another dart at the beast. He roared and came charging out of the house. This time he ran right past her and out into the open field on the east side of the town; pursuing an invisible foe in the long grass.

Cora wasted no time. She was inside the house in flash. Burning timber was crashing all around her as she searched desperately for the source of the cry. She was about to give up and flee before the entire building came down, when she saw a cellar trap door. Ripping it open she revealed a woman huddling over a small child.

***

Sadie’s heart suddenly leapt to her throat when she saw him. There was Grumut - the creature who had killed her family. He was alone and moving away from the village. Hear head suddenly spinning she kicked hard at her mount and charged. The world blurred by as her horse thumped towards the huge creature.

Grumut saw the horse charging him long before he was in danger. Scowling he raised his axe. Shifter and mount thundered towards him. Then, moments before he would be trampled beneath the hooves of the horse, his enormous black axe whirled through the air. The horse's hot blood was everywhere, and then the creature slammed into the minotaur. With a grunt of exertion he stopped the horses charge! Sadie was sent hurtling through the air. She could see Grumut below her as she tumbled. Whirling in space she crossed her arms, drew her swords, and landed on her feet with a thump - facing Grumut. She roared and prepared for a battle to the death.

Thaspar had followed Sadie's charge. Now Sadie's horse lay screaming and dying in the bloodied grass, but there was no chance to break off the charge. He was bearing down on the minotaur full kilter, but Grumut was still ready. It took Thaspar a moment to realize what had happened. Grumut had cleft his entire mount into two pieces. By the time he realized that he was tumbling through the air he was already landing on the ground with a hard thump. Sadie was closing on the beast, so he rose and followed suit.

***

Cora had only found two survivors of the town: a little girl and her mother. The woman said her husband was in the army. Cora wondered if it was ir'Camyra's family, but she didn't want to press the issue.

***

Flanking Grumut on either side Thaspar and Sadie were fighting for their lives. Her teeth bared, and chest heaving Sadie slashed viciously with her swords. Thaspar assailed the minotaur with fists and feet.

With a look of disgust the minotaur turned to Sadie. Up close she could see his tattoo covered body, his piercing and his chains. Suddenly she remembered.

***

Everything was in chaos. The caravan was under attack. Everyone was screaming. Sadie was hiding under a wagon with her family. Her father was arguing - he wanted to fight - but her mother was begging him to hide with them. Sadie crept to the far side of the cart and peered out through the spokes. She was so small - what could she do. Suddenly her eyes met with a fearsome minotaur. He was covered in tattoos and piercings. He smiled at her. Not a smile of friendship, but wicked smile; the smile of someone who is about to make a weaker creature suffer, and takes great pleasure in it. The beast’s eyes burned into her soul. Then, with a quick motion he pointed a minotaur and an ogre to the cart.

Sadie couldn't remember any more. Her next memory was watching a Brelish soldier speak a eulogy over a pile of bodies, and then setting it ablaze. She knew her family was in that pile, somewhere.

***

The blow was sudden. The enormous axe came crashing down on the sword in her right hand. Before could react it shattered under the impact. Then it came down on the sword in her right hand destroying it as well. Grumut smiled. That same smile she had seen 11 years ago.

The shifter’s lips curled and her eyes flared. Drawing two daggers from her belt she leapt forward. The minotaur had already turned to attack Thaspar. She attacked with terrifying ferocity. Snarling she plunged the daggers into the creature’s flesh. Opening her mouth she took a huge fleshy bite out of the monster's back. The minotaur roared with pain.

As this was happening, Thaspar was fighting to stay alive. The wicked black axe came crashing down on him again, and again, and again. He could feel his bones breaking. He felt the horrible heat of his own blood pouring over him from gaping wounds. He fumbled for a potion. Again and again the huge axe slammed down on him. Soon everything went black and he fell into a bloody heap.

Grumut turned, smiling wickedly, towards Sadie. Cora appeared from behind a building and fired a dart into the minotaurs back. But he just raised that massive axe above the shifter.

Roaring in a crazed frenzy Sadie leapt forward onto the monster. Tearing, biting, stabbing, and snarling she ripped at his flesh. She tore out handfuls of piercings, and bit deep into the beast's flesh. With a final burst of strength she plunged her dagger deep into Grumut Firebrand.

The smile slowly left the minotaur’s face. Her dagger still deep in the monster's chest their eyes met. A sudden look of shock and fear came across Grumut's face, as he staggered backwards. He moved his mouth as to speak, but only blood burbled out. His face became angry, but then he fell to the ground; hard.

Grumut Firebrand, scourge of Breland lay dead. His massive axe was still clenched in his lifeless fist.

Cora quickly revived Thaspar with a potion. Sadie, her mouth still dripping with the minotaur’s blood, and her eyes glinting with just a hint of feral madness, began hacking off the minotaur’s head with her daggers. As the rabble of Grumut's followers drew closer she held their leaders head up high:

"I did this to your leader! Who wants to be next?!"

They fled.

The trio knew that eventually the rabble would get over its initial fear and would be back. They quickly searched the minotaur. He didn't seem to be carrying anything except for the huge greataxe. Cora did a quick search for magical auras and found he was wearing magic armor. Tugging on a special body ring revealed magical hide armor which could be disguised as numerous piercings. They took this too and quickly set out on foot to the east. Both horses had been killed, and the wolf, Granite, had run off. With them they took the woman and child Cora had rescued from the town.

After a days travel they met up with the Brelish army heading west. The trio gave the army directions on how to find Grumut's band, and the army gave the trio horses for the rest of their journey.

Sadie felt strange. After all these years she had finally killed the monster who had slaughtered her family. She cut a braid from her hair.

The woman and child stayed in Galethspyre, and the trio continued on. Crossing the ferry, they boarded the first lightning rail coach bound for Sharn. Finally, after what had seemed like ages, the huge spires of the City of Towers appeared on the horizon.

They were finally home.
